Welcome back to the Salt and Light Commission. As we continue through Holy Week marching toward Resurrection Day, we will be come to another holiday that is somewhat misunderstood or that many are not sure why it is even a holiday. Today we will be looking at Good Friday and Why is Good Friday Good?
If you study your bible you know that Jesus was betrayed early Friday morning and through a speedy and unfair trial, was crucified Friday afternoon where He died. All 4 of the gospels record this event, but you can read Matthew 27:32-56 for an account of that story. Good Friday is the the day that Jesus was crucified. So if that is true, why is it that we as Christ followers celebrate a holiday that our Lord and Savior was nailed to a cross and killed? Why is this good?
I’m going to give you 3 reasons why Good Friday is celebrated, and why it is actually good. In addition, I’ll give you a forth bonus reason at the end of this post…so continue reading for that one.
1.) The death of Jesus is not the end of the story. After Jesus died and was buried He didn’t stay dead. On the third day, Sunday morning, He rose again. When His followers came to the grave site, He was not there.
“24 Very early in the morning on the first day of the week, the women went to the tomb, bringing the fragrant spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in, they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 They didn’t know what to make of this. Suddenly, two men were standing beside them in gleaming bright clothing. 5 The women were frightened and bowed their faces toward the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He isn’t here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Human One[a] must be handed over to sinners, be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and all the others.”
~Luke 24: 1-9~

2.) The Holy Sacrifice. Ever since the first man, Adam, sinned and sin entered the world, God has always wanted to redeem His creations to draw us back to Himself. I have written a post on this redemption system as well, you can read about it by CLICKING HERE. It’s a process, but a perfect sacrifice was regularly required to cleanse the people just enough for God to work in their lives. Without a sacrifice, God could not and would not deal with a filthy people. Because He is Just, He would have no choose but to judge us for the sin we were born into. Usually this sin sacrifice was the blood of an innocent and perfect animal, a lamb. There is no remission of sin without the spilling of blood.
“In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” ~Hebrews 9:22~
Jesus was called the Lamb of God, because He was born to die for the people and to wash away their sin. He was perfect because He was God and never sinned. When Jesus was sacrificed He washed the sins of the people of all generations. He was the perfect sacrifice and no other is needed. Through His actions we now have eternal life. Which brings me to the third reason Good Friday is good. But first a supporting scripture:
24 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”
~1 Peter 2:24~
3.) We have eternal life. As mentioned earlier Jesus was the final and holiest sacrifice. And when He rose from the dead He came back into His glory and His immortality. Because we are His followers we also will put on immortality when the earthy body perishes.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
~1 Corinthians 15:53-55~
But there is a catch. Jesus cleansed every sin of mankind with His sacrifice, but in order to receive the gift of eternal life, you must truly believe in what Jesus did for you. Accept Him as the promised Messiah and live a life according to His teaching.
So, I have given you 3 reasons why Good Friday is good. With 3 reasons like that, how could we not rejoice? If there was no Good Friday there would be no redemption for sin and we would all be headed on a one way trip to a Devil’s Hell.
Sure it’s sad that our Lord and Savior was wrongly accused and crucified, but if it hadn’t happened we all would be doomed. And we don’t really celebrate the killing of Jesus, because He wasn’t killed. He gave up His life, for us freely and He rose again, proving to be God.
John 10:18 says,
“No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”
Before we close, I’d like to present the bonus reason I promised why Good Friday is good.
4.) Good Friday is the original Black Friday! We all love Black Friday deals, right? Well on this particular Friday we didn’t get deals on 70 Inch TVs or air fryers, but we got the greatest deal ever… free access to God, without a priest being present! We can come to Him boldly anytime, not just once a year. It says here in Matthew 27 starting at verse 45: Emphasis on Verse 45 and 51.
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b]
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
It says the sky was dark…the sun was covered and it was black, as all the sins hung on Jesus.
The Temple curtain separated a Holy God from sinful people. Now immediately as Jesus carrying the sins of the world; past, present, and future died…we became sons and daughters of God, washed clean. The barrier between God and man was broken.
Glory be to God! That’s powerful! God loves us…and His name is Jesus.
