Welcome back to Salt and Light Commission. We are continuing the topic of proving that Christianity is true or at the least providing Christians with the evidence that what they believe is true. That it is not just blind faith…as people have said in the past, but that is is rooted in evidence.
The existence of God argument can get complicated. Not because there is no evidence of God– on the contrary. The evidence of God is written within the scientific laws that try to dismiss him as a fairy tale. It could get complicated if one doesn’t have a basic understanding of the 2 law of thermodynamics, The expansion of the Universe, Radiation Afterglow, Great galaxy seeds, and Einstein’s General Relativity…what is commonly known of as SURGE. If you go through all the points here, it proves the universe had a beginning. It’s a shared belief among the different sides.
But the purpose of the post is not to deep dive into the world of physics and how God fits within it. The purpose is to break it down a little lower so you can explain it in one conversation.
Who or What is God?
First we need to define God. What is God or who is God? You ask 50 different people who have some belief in God, you’ll get 50 different answers. Topically everyone is a theist.
Theism–a belief in the existence or nonexistence of a divine being(s). Theism can be broken down into 4 categories.
- Monotheism: One God (God made all) made up of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
- Pantheism: (God is all) made up of Zen, Buddhism, Hinduism, New ageism
- Polytheism: (Many gods) made of Pantheist and Confucianism
- Atheism: (No God at all): Humanism
We can actually absorb polytheism into Pantheism since they represent the same religion, by theology.
Now that we have a definition were most people fall into, let’s move into how such a being can actually exist. But before we do, let’s deal with the Pantheism theology. Pantheism believe God is all. He is the wind, the birds, the trees. Which would also, in theory, make us gods, (table that for a second and let’s make this point), it would also say that Satan and God are all God…they’re the same. Evil and good are both God. Darkness and light are both God. Basically they would say opposites are the same and all are God. This draws back to Part 1 of proving Christianity is true – does truth exist?
If you haven’t read that post you can click right Here to read it.
This theory goes back to truth being wavy and non-constant. Either God is evil or He is good. He is either light or darkness. He is either just or unjust. He can’t be both.
So Pantheism along with polytheism is false.
The best way to prove God exists is to go to the Bible. He is although it, invisible or not. His will is working through every verse. But we must go outside of the bible to prove God exists, because the people we are talking with might not believe in the bible. Furthermore we are trying to shift your faith from blind faith to faith in reason.
So let’s get our proof of God’s existence from His greatest critics–the Atheists.
Most Atheist agree that the universe had a beginning and it started from nothing. That means that space, matter, and time all started together from nothing. They call it the Big Bang Theory. Whatever you call it, the monotheist believe it too. We just know that God caused the big bang and started it all. And this Creator whoever He is, if He created space, matter, and time, He can’t be made of space, matter, and time…because none of it existed for Him to be made of it. This creator has several characteristics we can draw from this.
- He is spaceless
- He is timeless
- He is immaterial
- He is powerful
- He is personal
- He is Intelligent
So according to atheist, space; matter; and time came from nothing. So whatever created it had to be made out of none of those things. Atheist like to say they stand on the side of science and reason, but the fact that everything came from nothing violates a scientific law…the first law of Thermodynamics.
Something that cannot be governed by laws of science and is not made or limited by space, time, or matter; is a being that is light-years beyond us.
And the notation that one of the three had to come into existence first to create the other two is not factual. We know that they all came into being at the same time. Because if there was matter and no space where would you put the matter? If there was matter and space, but no time, when would you place space and matter? This is what is known as a Continuum. All three coming into existence at the same time. I’m not proving anything with the bible, but the bible actually supports this fact in the first verse. The bible states this very clearly:
In the beginning(TIME), God created the heavens(SPACE) and the Earth(MATTER).
The Fine Tuning Argument for the Existence of God
Think about the universe and our earth in that universe. How fine tuned it is for life. If the earth was tilted just a little more in either direction, weather would be too hot that water would boil away or weather would be too cold, that water would freeze. The same would be if we were on the inner most edge of the Goldie Locks zone (habitable zone) of our orbit around the sun or the outer most edge of the Goldie locks zone. The earth sits in the calm outer edge of the the Milky Way Galaxy, if it was towards the center, life would not exist. The environment is too hostile and too chaotic for life. The moon is earth’s cosmic brake pedal. If it was not there, the earth would spin faster. 24 hours days would shrink. And not only that, but the weather would get more and more violent. Great wind storms would start and they would become more frequent as the earth would spin faster and faster. Life would not survive.
Think about the process that makes you, you at your conception. Think about the action of a sperm and egg. The moment the sperm is released it makes the journey to an egg, an object it has never ever seen, but it somehow knows that it has to go fuse with it. They never met yet it knows this is what it must do. Fertilization caused cells to multiple at astronomical rates. Brain cells at 100,000 times a second. How did the cells know to become brain cells, or lung cells, or heart cells? It’s no accident. The scientist don’t know why this happens. It’s not the brain, because the brain is not developed. They might say it’s the Regulator Cell. Well then how does one cell out of the bunch know to become a Regulator Cell? Where did it get the information to know what a brain cell is suppose to look or do from a heart cell or a stomach cell? The answer is : It’s all goal driven. An intelligent designer is the only answer for the complexity of you. Complexity on this level cannot come along by accident and get the same results billions and billions of times over the span of modern human history…or the span of the entire human history. It happens the same way over and over again.
Thinking back on the universe. Here is what a famous Atheist said:
Famous Scientist Quotes
“Almost everyone now believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning at the Big Bang.” – Stephen Hawking
So Stephen Hawking believed in the the universe creating from nothing. As Christians we believe that as well. He never called it God. This is what he said it was:
“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing…”
Two things are wrong with that. Number 1…gravity doesn’t create anything. It just brings stuff together over and over again in a physical world. Number 2…There was no physical world to bring anything together. There was no matter (stuff). There was nothing. No gravity. The law of gravity had to have a law giver. So the answer of gravity being the creator does not satisfy.
Here is an Agnostic man of science quote:
“With the proof now in place, cosmologists can no longer hide behind the possibility of a past-eternal universe. There is now no escape, they have to face the problem of a cosmic beginning.” – Alexander Vilenkin
So here is another scientist that agrees with us that the Universe was not and is not eternal. It had a beginning. So if nothing had a beginning something must have started it. Monotheist believe this something to be God.
Science exploration is proving God. Here is a few more quotes from Nobel Prize Winners. There work was apart of the SURGE evidence we talked about earlier.
Arnos Penzias stated to the New York Times on March 12, 1978:
“The best data we have [concerning the Big Bang] are exactly what I would have predicted, had I nothing to go on but the five books of Moses, the Psalms, the bible as a whole.”
Read the article here:
Robert Wilson the partner of Arnos Penzias stated in an interview:
“Certainly there was something that set it all off. Certainly, if you
are religious, I can’t think of a better theory of the origin of the universe
to match with Genesis.”
“There is no doubt that a parallel exists between the big bang as an event and the Christian notion of creation from nothing.” -George Smoot
Here is the sum of all that SURGE evidence stated here in an interview with Christianity Today, Robert Jastrow said, “Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover. That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.”
The Logical Argument for the Existence of God
The previous section are all non-Christian scientist, all admitting that there was a supernatural force at work at the creation of the universe.
Like I said earlier Atheist like to say they lean on the side of logic and reason, so out of two statements that we can draw from this evidence, which is more logical?
Something/Someone created the universe out of nothing or Nothing / No one created the universe out of nothing? Which makes more sense?
Let me put it this way, if there is a painting, but you don’t see a painter, you know that there has to have been a painter. If you see a building, but you don’t see a builder, you know there has to have been a builder. If you see creation, but you don’t see a creator, you know there has to have been a creator.
A painter doesn’t paint itself nor does a building build itself. So why would we think that creation wouldn’t work the same way? The logical answer is this: Someone or something created the universe out of nothing. We call it God.
The Moral Argument for the Existence of God
If God doesn’t existence where do we get a notation of right and wrong or justice and injustice? If we don’t have a standard above ourselves then rape, murder, and torture can’t really be called wrong. It’s just our opinion against someone else’s who wants to do that. We couldn’t make an comparison between and good person and a bad person if we no standard beyond ourselves. We would have many standards on measuring good. Your standard of good would rest on your ideas and my standard of good would rest on my ideas. We want justice for crimes committed against us or our land because we know that an injustice has been done. But if everything is just random and we are only acting on the processes of our DNA, how can we call crimes unjust?
Let’s talk about evil, before I close. Most atheist will say, that if there is a such a loving and good God how does evil exist? Any Christian knows that evil is not good, but God didn’t create it. Evil comes from freewillingness to go against God’s best. And evil doesn’t disprove God, it affirms his existence. Think about it. We live in a world of polarity. North-south, east-west, up-down, left-right, hot-cold, negative-positive, winter-summer, tasty-nasty, sweet-salty. I could go on, but you get the point. So, how can we have evil, but no good? The fact that we have evil, is a clear indication that we most have a ultimate source of good also. Besides we can’t rightly call something evil if we don’t have a standard of good to measure it off of. Unseen or otherwise. You can call it a higher power or God, but whatever it is, it existences.
You might be saying by now. “Well, fine, maybe there is evidence that there is a God, or and intelligent being. But which God? There are multiple versions of God. You said, this post would prove Christianity.” Well hang on, I’m not done yet. In my next post I’m going to lay it all out there, because up to this point we understand there is truth and we can know it and the truth is there is a God, but He isn’t the Biblical God – not yet. Stay tuned for next week’s post. The conclusion of the the argument of Is Christianity True. God bless.
