Glory be to God, my Lord and savior Jesus Christ! Welcome to Salt and light Commission! God—the creator of everything big and small from the vastness of space to the smallest atom in your body, He made it. Mankind has been trying to get closer to God ever since the Garden of Eden. So today I’m going to give you 5 simple steps on how to get closer with God today. Number five will probably shock many of you. So let’s get in to it.
The first thing you need to do is, Pray Multiple Times a Day. Most people if you ask them how many times a day do they pray, will give you the 3 times a day answer. Before every meal. And that is a good start, but one should desire to pray constantly through out the day. The answer should be: I lost count.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 English Standard Version (ESV)
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Praying constantly is God’s will for us. Praying is how we communicate with God and how God communicates with us in our spirit. We don’t have to use certain words to get God to listen. We can talk with God as you talk to your friend. You can talk to him about your day, good or bad. You can pour your heart out to Him in sorrow or in joy. He wants to hear from you. And because of the sacrifice Jesus did we can come boldly to God in pray, just a broken as we are.
The second thing you need to do to get closer to God is you need to Read your Bible Multiple Times a Day. For me I like to spend the first part of my day reading God’s word. And then periodically through the day. The Bible is God’s words recorded for us. It’s a love letter to us. He shows us his character. And it’s a guide for lots of the situations we may face in life. God’s word is food to the spirit. I used to be the type of person that dusted off his bible for Sunday and after church laid it down for the week. That’s not how we are supposed to be if the word is food for the spirit, I was starving my spirit, only feeding it once a week. How strong would you be if you ate only one meal once a week?
And we should do more than just read it, which brings me to the third thing we need to do to draw closer to God, Meditate on His Word.
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8 NIV)
That verse tells us why we should meditate on the word…or to always think on the word of God after we read it (…on your lips…). In order for us to be doers of the word and not just hearer. What good does it do us if we know the right thing to do, because we hear that it is right, but then go on to do the wrong thing? It doesn’t make sense.
The fourth thing that we need to do to get closer with God is to Fellowship with Like minded Individuals. Church is a good place to start. It’s a community that shares the same goals and desires. You can draw strength from stronger members within your church family. You can ask them questions and they may be able to point you in the right direction.
But this doesn’t have to be a church, it could be a group that you can be apart of that focuses on building a relationship with God.
And truthfully there is one bigger step to mention. Last but certainly not least. The most important step that you need to take in order to get closer to God. And it should actually be the first thing to do. The fifth thing is, Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Jesus was very clear when He said in John 14:6 (NIV)
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Many a people out there that are trying to get closer to God have bypassed getting to know Jesus as Lord. He sacrificed everything for you, so you can be close to God—close to Him. You don’t need a priest and a confessional, you can do it right where you are! When you confess that Jesus is Lord and you believe in everything He says about who He is and what He did, you are now a Child of God. And that in itself is a giant step closer to God!
So, there you have it, 5 simple steps to take in order to get closer to your Creator. He wants that. Like any relationship you must spend time with that person. If you are married or dating, or have dated, you know that the only way to get close to that person is to spend time with that person. To know what they like and what they don’t like. To know their character or personality. Getting closer to God is no different. Spend time in his word as often as possible and I guarantee you will get closer to God.
