The Empty Tomb of Jesus

Glory be to God and thank you so much for joining me on another post…this is the Salt and Light Commission. Our mission is to strengthen your faith in God and spread the love of Jesus to all the world.

As you know Easter Sunday  comes and goes, but the spirit of Easter is never gone, because it is to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave after being crucified.   Let’s call it Resurrection Sunday instead simply because of that fact alone.  There has been debate after debate between Jews and Christians, whether or not Jesus was the Son of God–the awaited messiah.  The Christians have old testaments verses that prophesy Jesus as the Messiah…over 300 verses!  The Jews say that those verses do prophesy the messiah but it’s not Jesus on which it speaks.  Today we will be looking at the greatest evidence of the Messiah that no one can deny… The empty tomb.

When Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world. A great gift was given to us.  All our sins were placed on His sinless body and when His blood was shed it covered our sins and He took the punishment we deserved on Himself.  And if we accept that, then we are clean and forgiven.  But after Jesus died completely his mission, He was placed in a tomb where He stayed until the third day then He rose from the dead, defeating death and hell forever.

Now everybody heard that the tomb was empty that Sunday morning. The stone was rolled away, and Jesus was gone.  The scripture says the religious leaders tried to cover it up by paying off the Roman guards to say the disciples stole the body (Matthew 28:11-15).    This is not only false, it’s not possible.

I have heard three explanations why the tomb was empty. Let’s run through them starting with the disciples:

1.) The disciples stole the body: This cannot be true. The disciples who were not warriors, but mostly fisherman. They couldn’t possibly take down the Roman guard which is about 16 well trained soldiers.   Remember when Jesus was betrayed in the garden and was being carried away by the mob, Peter drew his sword to help free Jesus. In the heat of the conflict Peter missed a big target (the body of a man) and only managed to slice a man’s ear. Clearly not warriors, and then they had to take down warriors. Let’s say they managed to take the body despite though great odds, where would they take the body? Jerusalem at that time was swarming with visitors for the Passover and Roman soldiers keeping the order. It would be impossible to travel with a body and not draw attention to themselves. Therefore this story doesn’t hold water.

2.) The roman guard was asleep: As trained military soldiers, they would have a rotating guard taking shifts to guard the tomb. They would have taken there job very seriously because as roman soldiers in charge of guarding a prisoner, dead or alive, if they lost a prisoner under their watch, it would mean certain death, by execution.   They would have a sufficient number of soldiers on rotation for the night shift about half (8). And again, the disciples could not overpower them let alone without causing enough noise to wake the others. They were not warriors not to mention stealthy warriors.

3.) The religious leaders took the body to make sure it wasn’t stolen: This is the weakest of the reasons. If they actually took the body…all they had to do is present the body to the public and reveal that Jesus was still in fact dead. By withholding it from the public they run the risk of proving Jesus’ point that He rose from the dead.   They would have single-handedly caused the explosion of Christianity. The very thing they wanted to stomp out.

So, the tomb was empty and no explanation I have heard can explain it away. If the disciples didn’t take the body, and if the Roman Soldiers wouldn’t be careless about their duties, and the religious leaders would not have any interest in taking the body from the tomb, that only leaves one reason why the tomb was empty…Jesus was exactly who He says He is.  The Messiah, The Son of God…God Himself.

Now I want to hear from you guys. Write in the comments below one reason you have heard why the tomb was empty, I listed 3.  List yours and I’ll explain it away and trust me, it can be explained away because Jesus Christ is alive and well sitting on the right hand of God with all power in His hands, interceding for us.  How do I know?  Because the bible says so.

If this post has been enlightening to you and now you see that the lies people have been telling you about Jesus is just that—lies and you want to come to Jesus and make him your Lord. All you must do is confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead.  The scriptures say you will be saved (Romans 10:9), saved from death, and now you will receive eternal life.
