How To Prove Christianity is True? (Part 1)

Welcome back to another Salt and Light Commission topic. Today we will be talking about proving Christianity. Sadly, lots for churches don’t teach why Christianity is true, they teach that it’s true, but not why.  And what’s wrong with that is now we have a generation that questions everything. They even question truth itself.  So if you don’t teach why it’s true, someone can come along and challenge their faith and say it’s not true and they don’t have any ammunition to fire back and say it is true and here’s why.

We need to know and show the evidence. There is a good teaching on this by Dr. Norman Geisler and  Dr. Frank Turek, in their book, I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, where Frank goes more in depth with 12 points.  I recommend checking him out on this topic if you want to dive deeper.  But he lists 4 ways to prove Christianity is true, because the 12 points can really be summed up in 4 points.  So here are the basics.

1.) We have prove that Truth is real and you can know it.
2.) We have to prove that God exists.
3.) We have to prove that Miracles can occur
4.) We have to prove that the New Testament is true.

So let’s dive into the first one.
As a Christian our faith is attacked everyday and you need to know how to stand up to those attacks.

(Q) So is True, True?

(A) Yes!

OK next point…No wait a minute. Now that answer might have satisfied my grandparents generation or even my parents generation, but it doesn’t do a thing for this generation.  You see, what we have now is a society that has a worldview around the theology of Post-Modernism and Relativism. Meaning there are no absolute truths, or all truth is relative (It’s true for you, but not for me), just to name a few of their arguments.

The problem with those world views are that the arguments for it are self contradictions. If they say, “there in no truth,” well how do they know what they are saying is true? They just made a truth statement. So what they said can’t even be trusted as truth, if there is no truth.  You see, it defeats itself.

You will hear a lot of Post-moderns say, “All truth is relative…It’s true for you, but not for me.  The bible may be true for you, but it’s not for me.”  Well there is a problem with that also. As an example let’s say I was going 60 mph in a 30 mph zone. The cops pulls me over and says I was going 60. And I reply back, “That’s true for you, but not for me.” Am I getting out of that ticket? No! Of course not!  It doesn’t work that way.

In fact, not to get to technical, but their ideas don’t hold up to the Laws of Logic which have in them the Law of Non-Contradiction, which states opposite ideas cannot both be true at the same time and the same sense.

Example with two statements. Say I have a basketball in my hand and I say it is round. Then I say the basketball is not round. Well, it is either round or it isn’t. They both can’t be true.  The statements contradict each other.

So I think we have successfully concluded that, that world view is self defeating,  And because it is self defeating then it can’t be true. So truth is real and you can know truth.

Now, in the concept of religion for an Atheist the truth is, there is no God and for the Christian there is a God. Here is the bottom line Christianity maybe false (hear me out). Or it maybe true.  Atheism maybe be true, but it could be false. Or they both could be false! But they can’t both be true!

So now that we know that truth exists, we now need to know what is the truth. To do that we must move to the second point: Proving God Exists!  Part two of proving Christianity is true.
